The atomizer automatically comes on when your HVAC fan does, and as long the HVAC system is on it will put out a short mist every ~20 minutes but the mist and standby time limit will slightly vary based on the scent strength you've selected(Low, Med, High). The scent is distributed throughout the entire car.
Not battery operated as that would get annoying. Instead this taps into your fan power.
No cutting wires but you will need to drill a hole that is completely hidden from sight and can be plugged should you ever decide to remove this. The device hangs on the inside of the glovebox and is completely out of the way.
